LONDON British Prime Minister Tony Blair on Tuesday warned that Britain is prepared to move to "a different phase" if Iran does not quickly release 15 British sailors being held for an alleged incursion into Iranian waterways.
As Iran announced it had begun to interrogate the detainees, Britain was considering upping the ante in its campaign to win their release, diplomats said, because of growing concerns that quiet diplomacy has proved fruitless.

We're talking about the re-enactments of the Battle of Great Bridge, fought on Dec. 9, 1775. This year's re-enactments will be Dec. 3 and 4 and Phelps will once again play the role of British Capt. Charles Fordyce. It was Fordyce who died bravely leading a charge of grenadiers against an American force. The battle took place near the area of the present drawbridge. It was a small but important fight because the American victory thwarted British plans for Virginia.

We set off the next morning and soon get into a rhythm on this do-it-yourself canal. At first Em steers, proud to be the skipper of her own boat, and I jump off to prepare the locks. Sometimes the lock's ready so I just have to open the gates, but more often it has to be either emptied or filled. A special windlass is needed to operate the sluices, called paddles, at the bottom of the gates. Some of these turn easily, but more often it takes every ounce of my strength to move them even one ratchet, leaning my weight on the handle or getting on my knees to pull or push. After the first couple of turns it's easier. I can feel muscles in my arms, shoulders and abdomen I don't normally use. Better than a gym any day, and more fun.
