NEW YORK - The marketers of the world's second largest-selling drug dodged a major threat to their revenues two months ago by reaching a deal to keep a generic competitor at bay until at least 2011.
Now, 10 lawsuits have been filed over the settlement Sanofi- Aventis SA and Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. reached with Apotex Inc., a generic manufacturer challenging blood thinner Plavix's patent. The suits, filed by businesses, unions and health plans, allege the deal violates antitrust laws by denying access to cheap, generic versions of Plavix.

The 25 top-selling medicines last year targeted persistent illnesses such as high cholesterol, stomach ulcers and depression that drug makers can highlight to patients in television commercials and magazine ads. Cheaper competition may hurt some of these products this year.
Pfizer Inc.'s cholesterol-cutting Lipitor was the best-selling treatment for the fifth year in a row, bringing in $12.2 billion in 2005, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Plavix, the clot treatment sold by Sanofi-Aventis SA and Bristol-Myers Squibb Co., rose to No. 2 with $6.3 billion in sales. Advair, a GlaxoSmithKline PLC asthma drug, had sales of $5.5 billion, pushing it up a spot to third.

WASHINGTON U.S. states objected to a plan by Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. and Sanofi-Aventis SA to keep a generic copy of their top- selling blood-thinner Plavix off the market, reviving a dispute over the product's patent.
An agreement to pay closely held Apotex Inc. not to sell a cheaper copy of the $4-a-day pill didn't comply with a 2003 agreement involving Bristol-Myers, attorneys general representing the 50 states said Friday. The states had sued Bristol-Myers on allegations it misused patents to thwart low-cost rivals.

NEW YORK Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. and Sanofi-Aventis SA received demands from U.S. antitrust regulators for documents related to an unsuccessful bid last year to delay generic competition to the blood thinner Plavix.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission served the drug makers last month with formal requests for records connected with a settlement that the companies made with a Canadian company to stall sales of cheaper, copycat pills, Bristol-Myers and Sanofi said Tuesday in regulatory filings.

Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. and Sanofi-Aventis SA said Monday they filed an injunction against Apotex Corp. to stop the Canadian drug maker from selling a less expensive, generic version of the blood thinner Plavix. They also said they have begun discounting Plavix to stem the loss of the drug's market share.
A hearing on the motion is set for Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, where the injunction was filed and a patent case on Plavix is pending.
