  • IN 1983, AFTER DECADES of writing such patented laugh- (and cash-) producing machines as The Odd Couple, The Sunshine Boys, Barefoot in the Park and Plaza Suite, Neil Simon decided to take a stab at sincerity. In what is known as his "BB" trilogy, Simon looked to his past and, over the next three years, wrote the autobiographical , Biloxi Blues and Broadway Bound, collectively the story of Eugene Jerome and his rocky path from late adolescence to young adulthood. Interestingly, the "new" Simon finally won the Pulitzer in 1991, for Lost in Yonkers - not part of the "BB" canon, but certainly informed by it.

  • It's common for writers and playwrights to begin their careers with autobiographical works. Norman Mailer's life in the army became fodder for "The Naked and the Dead"; Laura in Tennessee Williams' "The Glass Menagerie" was modeled after the author's sister, Rose. Neil Simon, whose "Brighton Beach Memoirs" opens tonight at the Fine Arts Center, went the opposite route. Simon had a string of hit comedies to his credit -- including "Barefoot in the Park," "The Odd Couple" and "Plaza Suite" -- before he began exploring his past in his 50s.

  • NEW YORK - Walk along the boardwalk on a late autumn day, and Brighton Beach can seem like an old-age home by the sea, where stooped ladies wear rouge like armor and almost everyone lives in the shadow of a difficult past. Along this Brooklyn outpost's ocean edge - the heart of much community life here - locals are talking about the betrayal they feel after the arrest of 17 people, mostly Brighton Beach residents, on charges that they faked stories of Holocaust survival to profit from money meant for survivors of Nazi persecution.

In Brighton Beach, N.Y., the Jerome family is not only safe but is pulling together to make it through the Depression. They are also driving each other crazy.

  • TW Lovers stars Joaquin phoenix in the Adam Sandler role of a bipolar Brighton Beach lad torn between a comely JAP (Vinessa Shaw), a crazy shiksa (Gwyneth Paltrow), and Isabella Rossellini as the world's least likely (yet most annoying) Jewish mother.
