The exhibition explores the braceros' contributions to communities in Mexico and the United States, the opportunities that became available to braceros and the challenges that they faced as guest workers during the war years and afterward. Included in the exhibition are 15 free-standing banners featuring oral histories, quotes and photographs by Leonard Nadel, a photographer who, in 1956, exposed employer violations endured by many braceros. The Nadel photos inspired the museum's work on "Bittersweet Harvest and the Bracero History Project, which also includes audio clips of former braceros relating their experiences. The firsthand accounts were collected as part of the project's oral-history initiative. This exhibition allows us to explore complex issues of race, class, community and ...

As a task force that worked to establish a memorial in honor of the heroes of United Airlines Flight 93 disbanded Saturday in Somerset, people attending its last meeting lauded the group as a shining example of democracy in action. When the history of the (Flight 93) memorial is written ... the work of the task force will be seen as pivotal. Not just for this site, but for the National Park Service," Brent D. Glass, a member of the Flight 93 Advisory Commission, told more than 40 people who met at the Somerset County Courthouse for the formal end of the Flight 93 Memorial Task Force.
Guests dressed to the nines and were ready to rumba at Tuesday night's opening of an exhibition celebrating the life and music of legendary Cuban singer Celia Cruz. Even usually decorous members of Congress were swaying to the infectious beat of Jose Alberto "El Canario" and his band of gyrating musicians and singers, especially after the evening's host, National Museum of American History Director Brent D. Glass, made the titillating observation that he had "never seen such a good- looking crowd.

Rep. Nick J. Rahall, D-W.Va., introduced legislation this week to require the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., to sell only items made in the United States. The proposed legislation would cut off federal funding if the museum continues selling products made in China. The Smithsonian gets about 70 percent of its funds from the federal government.

"More importantly though, it is a way for us to fulfill our mission to tell the story of America and its many peoples to an audience beyond those who walk in our doors in Washington, D.C.
WASHINGTON - In the gift shops of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History, miniature statues of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln sit next to toy U.S. soldiers beckoning tourists to take them home.
