When Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu argues unjustifiably for the need to continue the construction of West Bank settlements to allow for "natural growth" of settler families, he reminds me of the riskdriven guest player on the popular TV show "Deal or No Deal." In this show, the psyched up player is tempted to lose all his guaranteed winnings at an advanced stage of the game after achieving substantial gains. The player-turned-gambler often loses by overestimating his slim chances of winning the full million-dollar deal. Under the influence of passionate support from an interactive authence, the gambler typically rationalizes his refusal to quit while his situation is favorable and ends up losing. Eric Lapenna had not been in serious trouble with the law before, with only a breach of peace conviction on his record. But the 19- year-old Milford man was handed a three-year prison sentence Wednesday for embarking on a months-long crime spree last year that, like so many other cases that end up at Superior Court in Milford, was motivated by his drug addiction, authorities said.
Lapenna robbed the Stop-Lite Deli in Milford Sept. 8, 2005, netting about $200, and about two weeks later broke into his grandmother's West Haven home, stealing jewelry worth about $450. The crimes were motivated by his heroin addiction, authorities said.
