On their eponymous Verve Forecast debut, you'll find [Didi Gutman] playing an ominous piano-and-strings arrangement over a baile-funk rhythm, while [Sabina Sciubba] chants in German, singing words inspired by the 13th-century German farmers' revolutionary song "Die Gedanken Sind Frei (Thoughts Are Free)". But for Brazilian Girls (none of whom, by the way, are Brazilian, and only one of which is a girl) this is just the beginning. "Corner Store" is a complex, slow reggae song that melts into a Gypsy brass melody, and "Pussy," the record's best anthem, finds Sciubba singing the chorus "Pussy, pussy, pussy, marijuana..." over a dancehall rhythm section.
Sciubba is the band's diva -- if indie bands ever have divas -- and she is an unabashed sexual provoceteur. On "Long," she moans a languid...

None of them are from Brazil, and only one's a girl, but band's sound a mix of many influences
NEW YORK - None of these Brazilian Girls are Brazilian, and only one is a girl. Their sound is just as difficult to define - critics have called it world music, down-tempo, dance, funk and pop.

WHO: Brazilian Girls. Other performers include Suzanne Vega, Ollabelle, Pharaoh's Daughter and the Bill Ware Trio, plus two surprise performers.
WHAT: Concert celebrating the reopening of 7 World Trade Center.

While conceptually reminiscent of Talking Heads' Remain in Light and Naked, on Talk to La Bomb the New York group more often resembles early Bjork, on songs like "Sexy Asshole" and the bubbling cherry-cola disco of "Last Call." Apart from the Ric Ocasek-produced "Last Call," producer Mark Plati's prints are all over this sucker, recalling his work with latter-day David Bowie and Dee-Lite.

Opening the show is Brazilian Girls, which is, ironically, an all-male ensemble with, the exception of front-woman, Italian-born, Sabina Sciubba. Brazilian Girls, who KCRW Music Director Nic Harcourt describes as "sexy as hell," return from worldwide touring and festival circuits to make their debut at the Hollywood Bowl. Although not Brazilian, and mostly male, Brazilian Girls perfectly complements this eclectic line-up. This is also its only scheduled U.S. performance for the remainder of the year. Brazilian Girls never fail to put on an incredible show.
Joining Gray on this eve of world music is Zap Mama, whose acclaimed signature sound blends such diverse genres as soul, gospel, and Afro-Cuban rhythms.

[Sabina Sciubba] is European, but takes the name of Brazilian Girls; Didi is from Argentina. I come from a tiny town in West Africa," says [Baaba Maal], referring to Podor, which is located on the banks of the Senegal River. "I'm connected to these people through my experiences," he shares. He also identifies with Barry Reynolds, whom he credits as his "English writing partner.
In setting up the uniquely composed title track, "Television," Baaba Maal, whose album "Missing You" garnered a 2001 Grammy nomination, shares: "In Africa, the television set ia like a stranger you didn't ask to come into your living room. You don't care about who he is: he just seems to come from nowhere and give you information." On the structurally intricate, catchy upbeat track, Baaba Maal's prowess as an e...

Jazz Consumer Guide William Parker's New York festival pays dividends for record buyers everywhere Pick Hits William Parker Double Sunrise Over Neptune AUM Fidelity A large group with freewheeling horns, a string Aquartet (plus bass), oud, guitar (or banjo), two drummers, and an operatic singer from India named Sageeta Bandyopadhyay. A MINUS Nublu Orchestra Conducted by Butch Morris Nublu Morris's registered trademark (Conduction®) still reads like mumbo-jumbo, but he does have an uncanny knack for keeping large groups creative and clutter-free-nowhere more so than with this Avenue C house band, featuring horns from downtown jazzbos and vocals from underworld refugees (Love Trio, Forro in the Dark, Brazilian Girls).
