For holiday shoppers, those brand-name purses and clothes that go for $400 at a department store may seem like a bargain when peddled as $40 knockoffs on the street - but they take billions of dollars out of the economy and cost thousands of jobs, authorities said Tuesday in vowing a crackdown on counterfeiters.
As a result of a six-month investigation titled Operation Bell Bottoms II, authorities in November arrested 10 people, and seized $446,000 in counterfeit goods and $23,000 in cash.

But along with the Kathie Lee collection at Wal-Mart and the Martha Stewart and Jaclyn Smith collections at Kmart (sorry, Big K), Mr. Mizrahi jumped on the "Let's have a fashion line for the little people" bandwagon and put his name on shoes, handbags and belts. Apparently, the little people sometimes just ain't buyin' it so it went to the even littler people. You can find brand hew interesting purses and cute mules with kitten heels with the Mizrahi name on them at Goodwill. New, even. Maybe they aren't haute couture, and maybe you won't ever see the stars of Desperate Housewives wearing them on the red carpet. But they look great, they're new (did we already mention that?) and they don't cost an arm and a foot. Only you will know they aren...

Agnieszka Kuszynska has been picking up "little things" all year to send to her family in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Eventually, she filled six large boxes with towels, cosmetics, blankets, shoes, brand-name clothes and purses for her mother, sister and father.
Kuszynska said stores in Poland stock everything she sent home for Christmas. Still, she spent $250to ship gifts because she misses her family during the holidays and is proud to be making a better living here as a market research analyst than she could have in Poland. Plus, she said, mail from America still thrills her relatives.

Sitting in New Jersey's vast warehouses are millions of dollars worth of products prized by thieves -- electronics, prescription drugs and jewelry.
February's brazen daytime heist at a Carlstadt warehouse -- in which gun-wielding bandits tied up 11 workers and made off with $1 million in perfume and fragrances -- highlighted threats facing the "supply chain" that gets products from factories to store shelves.
