Bethesda land deal OK'd The Montgomery County Planning Board voted unanimously Thursday to purchase 1.3 acres of land on Bradley Boulevard, adjacent to Bethesda's Hillmead Neighborhood Park, for $2.5 million, increasing the size of the park to 5.64 acres. The decision ends a contentious and controversial case that dates to 2006, when the landowner sought approval to subdivide the property into four lots. The proposal was strongly opposed by neighbors of the property. Due to the funding source proposed to be used for the acquisition, the Montgomery County Council must grant final approval for the purchase.
Road construction will snarl traffic on the city's south side Saturday night as workers close a section of South Academy Boulevard from Bradley Road to Drennan Road. The closure starts at 10 p.m. and will run until 7 a.m. Sunday as workers pour concrete on a bridge that will connect Academy Boulevard drivers to the Milton Proby Parkway. Another closure will hit early Sunday when workers close eastbound Drennan at Academy from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m.
WHITTIER - A man was seriously injured but expected to survive after being stabbed in the neck late Monday, authorities said. Officers responded to reports of a man "covered in blood" about 11:45 p.m. in the 12200 block of Whittier Boulevard, Whittier police Officer Bradley White said.

The man told sheriff's deputies that he activated the app when he realized his truck was missing around 4:50 a.m. Tuesday from the 9400 block of Pony Gultch Way, near Bradley Road and Marksheffel Boulevard.

PASADENA -- Kelly Hunter's three children have big eyes, curly hair and giggly personalities, but she is crying. Hunter, 24, and her partner, Walter Allen, 38, are sitting with the children in a room at the Vagabond Inn on East Colorado Boulevard. Firefighters are battling a blaze that broke out about 3:30 p.m. today in a garbage and recycling transfer station in the 3600 block of Bradley Road. Black smoke was pouring from the metal warehouse at 3650 Bradley Road near South Academy Boulevard and U.S. 85/87, which is operated by Waste Connections Inc.
SANTA FE SPRINGS - A 19-year-old Santa Fe Springs man is expected to survive after being shot in the chest and back on Washington Boulevard late Tuesday, police said. The victim was talking with friends about 10 p.m. in the 11300 block of Washington Boulevard when a white sedan containing five people approached, Whittier police Officer Bradley White said.
An off-duty police officer injured in a motorcycle crash on the 605 Freeway remained hospitalized in critical condition Friday, authorities said. Officer Ryan Stringer, 25, was injured in the 8 a.m. crash Thursday on the northbound 605, just north of Whittier Boulevard, California Highway Patrol Officer Bradley Hopkins said in a written statement.
