NCAA Tournament Chairman Gene Smith spent the entire weekend fearful that it would be a challenge bracketing conferences with multiple teams especially the massive 16-team Big East.
Because a record 11 Big East teams made the NCAA field, there was no way of avoiding matchups between conference teams until the Sweet 16, so the committee wanted to potentially pit teams that met only once during the regular season.
