Missouri's court system is taking on one of its oddest jobs -- deciding what choices voters will have in candidates for the legislature.
Last week, six appeals court judges from across the state began taking testimony that will help them draw new for the state's 163 House districts and 34 Senate seats. The job fell to the Appellate Apportionment Commission after the politically appointed commissions that are supposed to draw the lines both deadlocked in August. Under the state constitution, that automatically puts six judges picked by the Missouri Supreme Court in charge of the process. Their decision, due by Dec. 17, is final -- unless it's challenged in the courts.
