Just as John Adams defended eight British soldiers accused of shooting colonists in the Boston Massacre, Missouri attorneys should step up and defend unpopular people and causes. That was the message of Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster at today's Law Day event in Springfield.
Koster offered a verbal walking tour of the Massachusetts Capitol building, Adams' stomping ground. Unlike most statehouses, the Massachusetts Senate arranges senators' feet in a circle, "a small difference that reflects the combative nature of John Adams," Koster said.

When asked in a newspaper questionnaire last fall to list his favorite legal case, then-judicial candidate Gerald Skahan cited one involving a lawyer whose clients were widely despised by the public.
The lawyer was John Adams. His clients were the British soldiers accused of murdering five colonists in the Boston Massacre of 1770.

Few school districts, if any, were teaching the pre-emancipation history of black people in this country. I got my first serious dose of black history as an eighthgrader in south Houston, though the lesson wasn't part of any structured class. I learned about Crispus Attucks when our overcrowded school, Evan E. Worthing, was split and the junior high school took Attucks' name. In the process, we were told how the mulatto sailor of mixed black and American-Indian heritage had become the first casualty of the American Revolution in 1770. He was shot by British soldiers as a provocateur in the Boston Massacre, and I remember thinking that was a pretty big deal, and that Crispus Attucks was a pretty cool fellow.

ORANGE COUNTY, Calif., June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Since its 1987 inception in Florida, a "shall issue" policy regarding carrying concealed weapons has been passed in nearly 75 percent of states. California is not one of them. Currently operating under the "may issue" policy, California is one of the most restrictive states relative to firearms laws. The issuance of CCW permits is at the sole discretion of the Sheriff of the county. This has led to a situation where some counties in California issue thousands of CCW permits annually, while others issue almost none at all. Bill Hunt, one of Orange County's leading candidates for Sheriff in the upcoming June 8th election, believes that this policy is flawed. Hunt announced he believes that "personal protection" is a legitimate reason for appro...

On the bitter cold night of March 5, 1770, Crispus Attucks, a 47- year-old black man, is generally believed to have been the first casualty of the Revolutionary War era when he was slain by British soldiers in what has subsequently been known in American history as the Boston Massacre.
This Saturday, 234 years after that momentous event, the Crispus Attucks Theatre at Church Street and Virginia Beach Boulevard, built in 1919 from plans by local black architect Harvey Johnson and which has recently undergone an $8 million restoration, will be rededicated with gala ceremonies.
