HILLSDALE -- Residents whose properties are routinely flooded by the Pascack Brook have petitioned Mayor Max Arnowitz and the Borough Council for support in asking a neighboring town to complete a remediation study.
Members of the Hillsdale and Westwood Flood Solution Group are seeking acknowledgment from borough officials in their effort to participate in Westwood's study on mitigating flooding, said Donald MacLachlan, an Upper Saddle River attorney representing the citizens group.

HILLSDALE -- Becoming a part of the Pascack Joint Municipal Court could save the borough up to $100,000, officials are hoping.
The Borough Council this week approved spending $4,200 on a study to determine if merging court services with Montvale, Woodcliff Lake and Park Ridge would be worthwhile. The borough could see savings of $75,000 to $100,000 from joining the collective court, Mayor Max Arnowitz said.

WESTWOOD -- The attorney representing a group of flood-affected Westwood and Hillsdale residents has drafted a letter to the council questioning the integrity of a waterway study being conducted by the borough engineer.
Don Maclachlan -- who has been retained by the Hillsdale and Westwood Flood Solution Coordination Group, a consortium of residents living in flood-prone neighborhoods -- delivered the letter on Thursday afternoon.

EMERSON -- The Borough Council is expected to renew interlocal agreements it has with two other towns that expire at the end of December.
Borough Administrator Joseph Scarpa said recently that the shared staff agreements, one with Hillsdale and another with Old Tappan, are working out well for Emerson.

HILLSDALE -- An upcoming revaluation of town properties will cost close to $250,000, the borough administrator said.
A search for an outside firm to conduct the revaluation -- approved by the Borough Council on Tuesday night -- is expected to lead to a contract by the end of November, with an eye toward having new tax rates in place in time for 2012.

HILLSDALE A controversial proposal to construct senior housing behind Ell Woods, which provoked vociferous complaints from a coalition of neighbors when it was first put forth years ago, could be returning to the borough.
The council is discussing whether to reconsider permitting age- restricted housing in certain areas of Hillsdale, including the 12- acre wooded tract stretching from Ell Road in Hillsdale to the North Gate Community in Washington Township.

HILLSDALE The Borough Council recently ended its policy of closing recreational fields on religious holidays, saying the town should govern without any religious influence.
This means that coaches, not the council, will determine when teams can play, and the sports teams could have the town's blessing to play on Christmas, Yom Kippur and during Ramadan.

HILLSDALE -- A 55-year-old borough man has been arrested, accused of using the Internet to acquire and distribute child pornography.
Michael L. Suarez was taken into custody on Thursday. Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said a joint investigation by his office and the police departments in Hillsdale, Carlstadt, Montvale and Upper Saddle River found that Suarez had been using his home computer to trade and store images and videos of prepubescent children engaged in sexual acts.

Francis J. Streich of Hillsdale, a former borough fire chief and volunteer firefighter for 40 years, died Wednesday. He was 74.
Mr. Streich, a driver for Rockland Coaches in Westwood, was the borough's fire chief from 1968 to 1969, and helped to organize the fire prevention bureau and Hillsdale Volunteer Ambulance Service.

HILLSDALE -- Donna Schiavone has resigned from the Borough Council, effective immediately.
Schiavone's resignation is due to a "change of circumstances," she said Friday.
