• Customs Defends Cut in Service

The head of U.S. Customs and Border Protection in San Francisco said his agency quit providing after-hour service to private jets at Salt Lake City International Airport because pilots were abusing the system. Instead of giving the required 72-hour notice for customs service on late-arriving flights, private Salt Lake pilots were giving two hours' notice, said John Leyden, director of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

David V. Aguilar, who heads the U.S. Border Patrol's volatile Tucson, Ariz., sector, which accounted for the arrests of more than 400,000 illegal aliens last year, has been named as chief of the agency, effective July 1. He will replace Chief Gus de la Vina, who will retire. The appointment was announced yesterday in Washington by Robert C. Bonner, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) commissioner. The Border Patrol, a former agency within the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, was transferred to the Department of Homeland Security last year and is now a part of CBP.

• Big Border Fine Worries Anglers in Area Waters
