Today we think of the U.S.-Mexico border as a cactus-riddled dystopia of night-vision-goggled drug smugglers in search of a drop- off, backpack-slinging immigrants in search of a better life, and flak-jacketed border agents in search of both groups. At the end of the 19th century, the thin line between the two countries was marked at three-mile intervals by cast-iron obelisks that were installed between 1892 and 1895. David Taylor, a Las Cruces photographer, took it upon himself to track down and document each of the 260 monuments, a crusade that had him trekking down remote desert gullies and into some violent neighborhoods. "I definitely had the federales wondering what the hell I was doing," Taylor said in an interview with Pasatiempo.

Ironically, it wasn't until she left her native Mexico and landed in New York City that [Duke Pinz]ón began to really notice Mexican laborers. "I went to private schools and was very privileged, but didn't realize it at the time," she says. "That's probably how it is everywhere for people like me." Her father owns a successful construction company in Puebla, and when she was growing up, her parents were able to afford a dark room in the house where she could develop photos. Questions of privilege and class didn't need to be studiously avoided-they went completely unnoticed.
Along with her own struggles to assimilate and earn a living (for a period, she herself was undocumented, and worked under the table as a waitress), a key experience in her political development came when Pinzón spen...

The Regulatory Flexibility Act requires that agencies publish semiannual regulatory agendas in the Federal Register describing regulatory actions they are developing that may have a significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities (5 U.S.C. 602). Executive Order 12866 ``Regulatory Planning and Review,'' signed September 30, 1993 (58 FR 51735), and Office of Management and Budget memoranda implementing section 4 of that Order establish minimum standards for agencies' agendas, including specific types of information for each entry. The Unified Agenda of Federal Regulatory and Deregulatory Actions (Unified Agenda) helps agencies fulfill these requirements. All Federal regulatory agencies have chosen to publish their regulatory agendas as part of the Unified Agenda. Edi...

SAY WHAT?: Dismay came over us during one morning commute this week, as we realized government-speak had infected the guardians of our border. In a radio interview, a Border Patrol official said illegal aliens bear watching here because they "traverse the transportation modes.
Really. Does that mean they travel through the area, or are they up to something more nefarious, like utilizing the vehicular infrastructure? We'll never know, so we'll just hope no field agents ever get this guy trying to radio a quick warning that trouble's headed their way.
