After four years at the helm of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency, Commissioner Robert C. Bonner is stepping down.
Bonner, 63, informed President Bush on Wednesday of his intent to retire and will leave office in November, according to officials with the federal Department of Homeland Security.

S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Robert C. Bonner, whose efforts to create a unified border security force have been one of few successes within the beleaguered Department of Homeland Security, announced his resignation yesterday.
Mr. Bonner took over the U.S. Customs Service in 2001 on the day before al Qaeda terrorists attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. He spent the next four years developing a "front-line, law- enforcement agency" - Customs and Border Protection - as part of Homeland Security to better protect the nation against attacks.
