HARRISBURG, Pa., Sept. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Commonwealth Foundation released today a price comparison study showing average wine prices were cheaper in all Pennsylvania border states and that bootlegging across state lines has cost billions in lost sales and tax revenue. The free-market think tank's month-long study compared prices from Pennsylvania's top 50 best-selling wines and spirits with prices of the same product in bordering states. The study concluded that wine was less expensive in all bordering states, from an average of 20 percent lower in Maryland to three percent lower in New Jersey, ranging as low as 25 percent cheaper for top-shelf wines in Ohio.
Last month, a Virginia man pleaded guilty to hiring a hit man to murder a couple he suspected of stealing his bootleg cigarettes. His gang was planning to sell 388,000 cartons in New York for a profit of more than $1 million. This investigation highlights the illicit profits and potential violence associated with those who illegally traffic in contraband cigarettes," said Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Agent Willie Brownlee.
Bootlegging and Violence
NASHVILLE - Bootlegging hadn't been much of problem in Hamblen County since beer laws loosened up decades ago, but the sheriff says he's suddenly seeing it again. Sheriff Esco Jarnagin thinks bootlegging is making a comeback in his eastern Tennessee county because of a concentration of illegal immigrants and a one-of-a-kind state law requiring everyone, no matter how old, be carded when buying a six-pack.
A bootlegging trial involving an owner of Dubuque's Star Restaurant and Ultra Lounge will be pushed back. Star owner Matt Kluesner asked the court for the delay because of a medical issue in the family. Kluesner is charged with bootlegging. The trial is scheduled for Sept. 10, and a Sept. 3 forfeiture hearing will determine the fate of seized alcohol.

A father and son peddling bootleg DVDs and CDs were arrested this week after being caught with more than $10,000 worth of merchandise, police said. Jinlian Yang, 42, and his son Shuai Yang, 19, of Flushing, N.Y., were arrested Tuesday at 100 Landsdale Ave., in the Devon section of the city, after police received complaints they were selling pirated DVDs and CDs out of their car, said police spokesman Officer Vaughan Dumas.
