Several Midwest bank marketer's creative campaigns were recognized recently at the 33rd annual American Bankers Association Marketing Network Advertising Awards. Judges considered about 400 entries in categories defined by asset size, so that banks with $250 million or less in assets competed against their peers. First National Bank (River Falls, Wisconsin), entered its annual report, an historical calendar and an events flyer, winning a Certificate of Excellence for its work. The materials supported a yearlong centennial celebration that included several events tied to the bank's history. Glenwood Springs, Colorado-based Alpine Bank created a campaign that was unlike Boone County National Bank's in that it targeted as many people as possible. Banks across the nation saw their best quarters since 2007, according to figures released by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Local banks also reported good news for shareholders, with the biggest players in the market seeing steady to strong earnings.
The big three local banks -- Boone County National Bank, Landmark Bank and Commerce Bank -- which represent about two-thirds of all local deposits, reported improved income in the first quarter of 2011 compared to the first three months of last year.

One of the changes wrought by the 2008 housing crisis was a dramatic shift in the types of home loans available. After Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac began to tighten underwriting standards, lenders began offering loans backed by other government agencies.
In 2005, Boone County National Bank issued two unconventional mortgages to Columbia-area borrowers. Last year, more than one quarter of the mortgages the bank issued were through government- backed lending programs.

A Columbia bank is helping residents show off their military ties with a weeks-long display of photographs and tributes.
Boone County National Bank leaders on Monday transformed their downtown lobby into a Hall of Heroes gallery that will stay up through Dec. 1. There, people can post photographs of veterans and write memories and "thank you" messages on the wall.
