About 163,000 people -- a 20 percent increase from 2000 -- lived in the 687-square-mile county in 2010. The county is governed by a three-member county commission. Each commissioner is elected to a four-year term.

A Boone County judge ruled last week that a man twice convicted in the 1990 slaying of a local farm wife was the victim of "a manifest injustice" and that no jury would have convicted him had investigators done their jobs.
Circuit Judge Gary Oxenhandler, who was appointed by the Missouri Supreme Court to review the case, said prosecutors failed to turn over key evidence to Mark Woodworth's lawyers and overlooked numerous conflicts of interest among prosecutors, a judge and law enforcement.

MADISON - A bond proposal set to go before Boone County voters later this month has generated mixed reactions as the county school system attempts to rebuild and renovate several of its schools.
Boone County was one of three counties - along with Harrison and Upshur - approved for funding from the state School Building Authority contingent on passage of bond issues by voters in those counties.

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon appointed a Columbia attorney Thursday as the new presiding commissioner for Boone County.
Daniel Atwill, a Democrat, is a partner in the law firm of Atwill & Montgomery and has practiced law in Columbia since 1976, according to the governor's announcement. He is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, where he served as a captain in the JAG Corps.
