An underlying tension inherent to the artistic experience is taking the most personal of emotions and encounters and laying them bare for an audience of acquaintances and strangers. Although it features more than 100 artists and spreads across the expanse of the Stephens Lake Park grounds, Art in the Park tends to that balance well. A Columbia tradition since 1958, the festival has always retained a wonderfully close, communal feel in which conversation and creative acceptance can flourish. Artists engage with other artists, craftspeople discuss their trade with community members, and residents have the chance to meet and greet each other, building bonds around their shared love for beauty in its many forms.
