"There was a crack in the walls of prejudice," said Father Kenneth Major, canon, rector of the Church of the Incarnation, who is a 1955 graduate of BTW. "They (faculty and administrators) made us keenly aware of what was happening. Teachers instilled in us a common purpose to excel."
"There Sammy Moore of Sam and Dave, Paul Kelly, Earl Bethel, Eloise Foreman, Wally Futch and others," said [Woods]. "We had a lot of night clubs in Overtown; The Knight Beat, the Mary Eliza-beth Hotel, the Sir John Hotel, the King of Hearts, a lot of entertainment from out of town performed in those clubs."

When Marcelis Muriel was a freshman at Booker T. Washington High School, he made a list of goals.
Now, as a graduating senior, he's been able to check off : 4.03 GPA, first black male valedictorian at his school since 2002, one of the 800 National Achievement scholars in the country, and acceptance into one of the top 100 engineering programs in the country.

The Booker T. Washington High School Alumni Association and state Rep. Cheryl Gray, D-New Orleans, plan to rededicate the school's annex building on "Crimson and White Day" from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at 2101 S. Roman St.
Crimson and white are the school's colors.

BTW's inspiring example
Once again, Booker T. Washington High School has made history in our great city (May 11 article, "Big day at BTW / School's entry persuades Obama to give speech to graduates").

In explaining why Booker T. Washington High School won the Race To The Top challenge to earn its commencement speech Monday from President Barack Obama, the White House cited statistics of various school achievements.
But anyone who watched the videos submitted by finalists could see elements in BTW's entry that numbers cannot measure - passion, motivation and, quite clearly, an enthusiasm for Obama.

BTW's lesson for us all
My wife, a Booker T. Washington High School graduate during the segregated schools era, went on to get her bachelor's degree within four years from the exalted education institution the University of Chicago.

This afternoon, a new generation of Booker T. Washington High School students will add another chapter to the school's iconic history.
President Barack Obama will deliver the commencement address to the 150 students of the BTW graduating class of 2011.
