  • Town of Delafield - Waukesha RiverFest is history. Waukesha BluesFest is what's happening. The new event launches with headliners Booker T. and the MGs on Friday, Aug. 10, and Mavis Staples on Saturday, Aug. 11.

  • Pop Steve Cropper, "Dedicated" (429). One legend paying tribute to another, with a diverse crop of guests: that's the concept behind Steve Cropper's "Dedicated." Cropper, the guitarist in Booker T. & the MGs and on many of Stax Records' greatest hits, has often cited Lowman Pauling as his main formative influence. Pauling led the 5 Royales, the influential R&B group whose early '50s songs were precursors to rock 'n' roll and soul. However, "Dedicated to the One I Love," "Think" and "Baby Don't Do It" are probably better known in later versions by the Shirelles, James Brown and the Band, respectively. The album is a nostalgia trip and history lesson. Cropper's guitar and his crack band of Memphis compatriots often take a secondary role to the singers, who include Steve Winwood...

  • For its sophomore release, a follow-up to last year's lauded debut "The Safecracker," the Memphis- based instrumental trio the City Champs returns with more of its classic sound gussied up with a few musical embellishments. The threesome of top in-demand session musicians - Joe Restivo (guitar), Al Gamble (Hammond B3 organ) and George Sluppick (drums) - still work its core musical base, a cross between Booker T & the MGs, the Meters and Jimmy Smith. On "The Set-Up" they receive additional help from the Bo-Keys horn section, Latino percussionist Felix Hernandez and Bo-Keys bassist/producer Scott Bomar, who recently produced Cindy Lauper's critically acclaimed "Memphis Blues" record.

  • Donald "Duck" Dunn, the legendary bassist who helped create the soulful sounds of Stax records, passed on May 13 at the age of 70, while on tour in Tokyo. This afternoon at 4:30 there will be a gathering at Fourth Street and Beale Street to form a second line behind Duck's funeral procession for his final send off. Duck," as everybody knew him, was part of the Booker T. and the MGs and contributed to classics as "Hold On, I'm Coming" and "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay." He collaborated with musicians such as the Blues Brothers, Eric Clapton, Neil Young and Bob Dylan.

  • Cyd Mosteller was born singing. As a toddler, she would pull a chair to the windowsill and pretend it was a piano while singing songs she was making up on the go. After graduating from high school, Mosteller joined a big band as singer. The same year, she met her husband, Richard Mosteller. "I looked at him and he looked at me, and the earth shook," Mosteller remembers. He was drafted shortly after, and Mosteller followed him to Atlanta, where they married. He played the trumpet for the Army, and Mosteller joined the Third Army Dance Band as singer. After returning to Memphis, Richard joined the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, while Mosteller sang jingles and eventually did voiceovers for the William B. Tanner Jingle Co. She also regularly sang back-up vocals at Sun Studios, singing for Joh...

  • WANT TO GO? Booker T. and The MGs With Eddie Floyd WHEN: 8 p.m. June 25 WHERE: Clay Center TICKETS: $19, $29 and $39 INFO: 304-561- 3570 or www.theclaycenter.org At 67, Donald "Duck" Dunn, bass player for Booker T. and the MG's, isn't ready to retire yet, though he wouldn't mind scaling back a little. It's just so hard to stop.

  • Two "jams" (concise runthroughs) with members of Booker T. and the MGs are spread elsewhere: "Born on the Bayou" (appended to Cosmo's Factory) is rough, but deft organ accents highlight the pre-reggae profile of the skiffling "Down on the Corner" (on Willy and the Poor Boys.) You don't have tobe ajamster to strut with a very live version of long, tall "Suzie Q" (tacked to CCR's self-titled debut), who always was an exceedingly well-preserved rockabilly queen; as presented here (they were opening for Jethro Tull!), she serves herself well by shaking off Creedence mastermind John C. Fogerty's cute little reefermadness production touches.
