  • ATLANTA - The way Sonny Perdue remembers it, it was close to Christmas in 1997 when fellow state Sen. Mark Taylor paid a visit to eat barbecue and talk about the race for lieutenant governor. He came to my house in Bonaire and begged me not to run," Mr. Perdue, now the governor, said in a recent interview. "He told me that he planned for this all of his life and he sure hoped I wouldn't do it.

  • Self-promoter Brad Smart has spent a career teaching companies a better way to hire people. Fill your company with best and you'll be the best. Specifically, keep the employee roster filled with 90% "A" players and your company can accomplish anything. That mantra lies at the heart of the hiring method Smart conceived of more than three decades ago and dubbed "topgrading." Through his Smart & Associates Inc, in the northern Chicago suburb of Wadsworth, IL, Smart runs training sessions for multinational companies incorporating topgrading into their executive hiring practices. An unabashed self-promoter who'll talk about his latest project at the drop of a hat, Smart is also sincere about bringing better hiring practices to the masses. According to him, if employees go through topgrad...

  • Aruba peacefully stretches out welcoming the smooth descent of the American Airlines jet on to the runway of the new $67 million (U.S. Customs Clearance) Queen Beatriz International Airport. In the distance, rugged Mt. Hooiberg, prickly with cactus, and the healing aloe plant, stands guarding the 70 square miles of the most westerly of the "ABC" (Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao) islands. The voice of the island is warm like the weather (82 degrees year-round), gentle like the tradewinds that shape the signature watapana (divi-divi) trees, and diverse like the English, Spanish, Dutch and (our local language) Papiamento that greets you. • NEW HAVEN -- Longtime firefighter Edward Bohn was a handy guy with one heck of a workshop. "I always enjoyed working with my father in his workshop," said a daughter, Gladys Barfield of Bonaire, Ga. "He had so many tools. It's not something we did all the time, so that made it even more special when we did. Bohn, who died June 7 at age 93, took good care of himself and was doing yardwork until a couple of weeks before his death. "People would ask him how he managed to live so long and he'd say it was because he smoked from the age of 9," laughed his other daughter, Louise Bahner of Branford. "But he never drank! And he always kept active."
