- High Anxiety
After being designated as a "troubled" teenager, Whitaker was sent to a lady counselor whom he madly fell in love with and whom he lost shortly after the lady moved to another town. Stricken by heartbreak, he quietly denounced psychotherapy, transference love, and the hope of ever being anything other than "troubled." He became a bona fide drug addict, hustler, and compulsive gambler fifteen years later--a depressing situation that he later tried to escape by engaging himself again into psychotherapy. Whitaker relates his own struggle to grow healthy and be happier while expressing his fear at the price that his brain and body ought to pay in such therapy.
