Armed with a bachelor's of science degree in elementary education, [Douglas Kearney] said he was "meant for teaching" and one of the highlights of his life is "seeing his own teachers take pride" in his accomplishments.
The work," he said, "is not in vain and the possibilities are endless for our young people. I want to be that teacher who really cares," he emphasized, "and not just care, but make things right.
"As an educator of middle school students and a mentor of both veteran and novice teachers over the past 25 years, I have witnessed various styles, attempts, adjustments and transformations of teachers," said [Diane Smith]. "However, one who stands out and stands among the best is Mr. Douglas Kearney."

REDLANDS Comedians Jessica Marchant and Guy Groves will have the opportunity to defend their titles as winners of the Redlands My Funny Valentine Contest when the second round of competition is held 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, at the Boiler Room, 345 N. Fifth St.
Hosted by Our Town's "Queen of Comedy," Lynn Epstein, the contest includes eight or more comics presenting five minutes each of their best material. Judges and members of the audience score the comics on their personal style, originality, humor and overall impression. Judges include Boiler Room owner Kasha Shahabi and Redlands Daily Facts Our Town Editor Steven Sabel. Tie-breakers are decided by Epstein.

PHILADELPHIA - The landlord of an apartment building at first thought a circuit breaker had tripped when he went to the basement and found all the lights were out. But all six bulbs had been removed, and he heard dogs barking inside a boiler room, its door chained shut.

Q:The central heater (boiler) in our house is located in a small, separate room that has no insulation. It has a louvered wood door opening into a hallway. The problem is the noise that the heater makes when it cycles on and off. A bedroom that adjoins the boiler room is also cold, even though there is baseboard radiation. What can we do to reduce the noise and warm up that bedroom?
A:It is not unusual for central heaters to make some noise when they are operating. With hot-water heat such as you have, the burner itself generally makes some noise when it fires up, pipes that carry water to the radiators expand and contract and the radiators themselves can be quite noisy.
