Not long ago readers reminisced about the various restaurants that were located in the building most recently known as the Boiler House on Cleveland Road in Wooster. The Buckeye Tree was one of the many eateries mentioned in the column.
It was the very first restaurant," said Jim Byrd of Wooster. "After moving here from San Jose, Calif., my father built it in 1969. I remember the basement banquet room was dug out on July 1 -- just before the July 4 flood. Even though it was high up on a hill, the hole flooded and it looked like a giant swimming pool.

Q:The central heater (boiler) in our house is located in a small, separate room that has no insulation. It has a louvered wood door opening into a hallway. The problem is the noise that the heater makes when it cycles on and off. A bedroom that adjoins the boiler room is also cold, even though there is baseboard radiation. What can we do to reduce the noise and warm up that bedroom?
A:It is not unusual for central heaters to make some noise when they are operating. With hot-water heat such as you have, the burner itself generally makes some noise when it fires up, pipes that carry water to the radiators expand and contract and the radiators themselves can be quite noisy. Some of the noise, and the lack of heat in the adjoining bedroom, is probably due to the lack of insulation in the wa...

Visitors to Prairie du Chien often comment on the 135-foot smokestack on top of the boiler house at the Prairie du Chien Correctional Institute on the city's south side. As one drives past it on U.S. 18, it still serves as a landmark for what once was Campion Jesuit High School.
The smokestack was built in 1922, when boilers were used to heat what would become the largest residential high school for boys in the United States.

The old Union Ice & Coal warehouse at 110 W. Vermijo Ave. has been vacant since 1970, and has been ravaged by neglect and fire department training. When Olson Plumbing & Heating Co. purchased the warehouse six months ago, company owner Mike Trapp intended to tear it down and use the area for outdoor storage.
The amount of money it would take to try and salvage that would be phenomenal," Trapp said Wednesday. When he bought it, the ice house and the adjacent boiler building were what Trapp called "structurally unsound" - the roof was severely damaged by leaks, and the rafters were rotten. The structure had been contaminated by asbestos, and was unfit for humans.
