Local players, coaches and parents are bracing for a jarring change regarding the development of 11- to 12-year-old hockey players in the United States.
USA Hockey will vote on a proposal banning bodychecking at the house and travel levels of Pee Wee hockey, effective for the 2011- 12 season, during the organization's annual meetings this week in Colorado Springs. The governing body for youth hockey in the United States will hold an hour of open discussion among coaches and other non-voting members of USA Hockey on Thursday morning, with the USA Hockey Board of Directors set to vote on the proposed legislation Saturday. A simple majority is all that is needed to implement the change.

other legislative developments - Buying booze in the early morning hours would become easier under a bill passed by the state Senate. The measure approved on a bipartisan 23-8 vote by the Senate would allow grocery and liquor stores to sell beer, wine and other liquor starting at 6 a.m. Current law forbids alcohol sales at retail stores before 8 a.m. The measure does not change the prohibition on selling liquor past 9 p.m. or beer past midnight. Now, legislation establishing such a mechanism, known as the Missouri Science and Innovation Reinvestment Act, or MOSIRA, sits on Gov. Jay Nixon's desk, bringing nearly 10 years of efforts to their furthest point yet.
But embedded in the bill are a raft of exemptions to the state's Open Meetings and Records Law, which would give a body potentially in charge of millions of taxpayer dollars the ability to keep much of its operations and records beyond public scrutiny.
