Too many women and men suffer from anxiety and depression over body image. An alarming number of lives are lost each year due to the consequences of eating disorders including the most serious, anorexia nervosa (extreme fear of gaining weight leading to self-starvation, sometimes accompanied by compulsive exercise) and bulimia nervosa (binge eating and purging by strict dieting, fasting, vigorous exercise or vomiting, sometimes accompanied by abuse of laxatives or diuretics).

During 2001 and 2002, a 15-year-old suffering from body dysmorphic disorder was prescribed Paxil. In September 2002, he committed suicide.

This sort of angst is very understandable," says Dr. Emanuel Maidenberg, an associate clinical professor of psychiatry at UCLA Medical School who has treated patients with severe body image problems, known as body dysmorphic disorder. "Women are culturally more disposed to these expectations of perfection when it comes to body image.

Dear Harlan: I have been having some problems with body dysmorphic disorder. It plagues my everyday life, and it makes it hard to live with myself and for others to live around me. Is there anything that I can do to help myself? I struggle daily with this problem, and it makes it hard to concentrate.
I have developed some not-so-healthy habits. I am afraid of developing an eating disorder, but I figure that's the only way to like myself. I really need help. --Scared and Dissatisfied
