As someone who grew up in a Connecticut family active in state and local politics, it saddens me to see the tawdry treatment of Sen. Joseph Lieberman by his fellow Democrats (Bill Clinton excepted, since he campaigned for the senator - a rare display of courage).
The statement issued by Democratic leaders Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. - that Sen. Lieberman was "too close to George Bush and the results bode well for Democratic victories in November" - should send a shiver down the spine of every Democrat in the country. Sen. Lieberman ran an honorable campaign for vice president in 2000; votes with his party 90 percent of the time; and was one of the only prominent Democrats to publicly rebuke Bill Clinton for the Monica Lewinsky affair.
