For two straight nights, Nathan Lewis came face-to-face with pop music icons most of us only hear on the radio, see on television or watch through binoculars at concerts.
Lewis, a Northmont high school product who also plays in the well- known area band Magic Jackson, based in Dayton, worked the stage crew at Paul McCartney's Cincinnati concert on Aug. 4 and Bob Dylan's concert at the Fraze Pavilion the next night.

NEW YORK - At age 68, Paul McCartney has the richest catalogue in pop music to wander around in. Only Bob Dylan could argue the point.
On a snowy night at Harlem's historic Apollo Theater, with a frisky band and a live radio audience, McCartney clearly enjoyed the journey. He performed a two-hour, 27-song set in front of Sirius XM Radio subscribers and celebrities like Jerry Seinfeld, Alec Baldwin, Martha Stewart, Tony Bennett and Rolling Stone Ron Wood.

Wordsmith Fred Shapiro was fed up with snooty quotations books stuffed with sayings by William Shakespeare and Lord Byron. Where, he wondered, were the great words of our modern heroes such as New York Mets pitcher Tug McGraw ("You gotta believe"), Woody Allen ("80 percent of success is showing up"), and Yogi Berra ("It ain't over 'til it's over")?
Indeed, what about the lyrics of Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger and Ed Fletcher? (That's a rap singer, folks).

NEW YORK - The best way to celebrate Peter Falk's life is to savor how Columbo, his signature character, fortified our lives.
Thanks to Falk's affectionately genuine portrayal, Lt. Columbo established himself for all time as a champion of any viewer who ever felt less than graceful, elegant or well-spoken.

Both Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney can be referred to as "sir." Middling British rocker Bob Geldof (another knight) and Irish rock royal Bono are reportedly neck and neck for next year's Nobel Peace Prize. It's all very dignified in the world of rock.
Too dignified.

CREEDENCE REUNION? At age 66, John Fogerty may be mellowing. The former band he led, Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) broke up in October 1972. Over the past four decades, Fogerty has harbored intense anger and bitterness toward his three former bandmates, especially drummer Doug Clifford and bassist Stu Cook (Fogerty's rhythm guitarist brother Tom contracted AIDS from a blood transfusion and died in 1990 at 48).
Back in the day, without consulting his three bandmates, Fogerty made a business decision for the entire band that left them all nearly broke and facing legal and financial problems for many years afterward. When CCR was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, Fogerty humiliated Clifford and Cook by refusing to allow them onstage with him. Instead, Fogerty perfo...
