  • On the eve of today's Evansville Redevelopment Commission meeting, four out of nine Evansville City Council members signed a letter urging the board to reconsider naming SMG as the management company of the Downtown arena. Despite the letter, Bob Goldman, the commission president, said he plans to support VenuWorks, based in Ames, Iowa, as the manger for the facility scheduled to open in November.

  • In an interview, Burdale Financial Ltd founder and chairman Dennis Levine talked about doing business in the UK, Europe and the US, and the future of asset-based lending (ABL) in the UK. Levine started a trade finance business in the UK, and had heard about ABL in the US. He met Bob Goldman, who was one of the owners of Congress Financial in those days, now Wachovia Capital Finance, and they invested in Burdale. Levine had never offered receivables finance before, as his business was trade finance, and he thought that's one of the main reasons for the impetus of ABL in the UK. On the issue regarding whether Burdale does cross-border lending in Europe, Levine said the company puts much more emphasis on the US rather than Europe. The future of ABL has certainly become more commonplace but...

  • Representing the protesting neighbors were attorneys Bob Goldman and Lee Rohe, who had imported for the occasion Eric Dadd, an attorney from Syracuse, NY, who would argue the case. With silver hair and tie, the dark-suited Dadd had a height and dramatic flair that contrasted with [Jim Hendrick]'s always-misleading dormouse look. The visiting attorney's silken tones, peppered with a street-smart "Okay?... Okay?" between each of his points, poured forth fascinating constructions such as "temporal period of time" and "facially sufficient," even (if we heard it right) the "nits and gnats of changes. Dadd grilled [Diane Silvia], a PhD in archaeology from Tulane, on her expertise. "Engineering?" "No." "Architecture?" "No." "Design?" "No." "Carpentry?" "No." Mr. Hendrick is recasting...

  • Buying and demolishing the Executive Inn to make room for an arena is an option the city is considering, Bob Goldman, president of the Redevelopment Commission said Tuesday. Arena manager John J. Kish met with the commission Tuesday morning in a closed-door meeting to discuss land acquisition strategies, and the Executive Inn is one of several sites "still on the table," Goldman said.

  • BURBANK, Calif. -- Bob Iger, president and chief executive officer, The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS), will participate in a question-and-answer ses...

  • It may have been a telling moment Tuesday when, after Evansville Technology Council Chairman Daniel Bugher finished updating the Redevelopment Commission on the city's Certified Technology Park, commission President Bob Goldman asked him, "Can you provide us with some scenarios? In response, what Bugher seemed to be trying to tell Goldman and commission members is that, two years after the city successfully applied to become the state's 10th certified tech park, the council appointed last summer is trying to make it less of a puzzle.

  • NEW YORK (Reuters) - Kohlberg Kravis & Roberts is hiring part of Goldman Sachs Group Inc.'s proprietary trading team, which is being shut down due to new restrictions on such trading. KKR is hiring about nine Goldman traders, led by Bob Howard, who heads Principal Strategies for Goldman's U.S. business. The team will be part of KKR's asset management unit, which manages $13 billion, and will join early in 2011.

  • The city's Redevelopment Commission unanimously passed a resolution Thursday expanding Evansville's Downtown Redevelopment Area, but tabled a second part of the resolution calling for the addition of 52 parcels of land to the city's possible acquisition list. Commission President Bob Goldman said the vote had to be tabled because two of the commissioners had to abstain from voting because of conflicts of interest. That left too few members voting to form a quorum.

  • Stephen Gaghan, the writer and director of Syriana, lived in Carrboro in 1989, during which time he wrote fiction, ate Greek grilled cheese sandwiches at Hector's, watched movies at the Varsity and saw the Pixies play in his favorite dive, Cat's Cradle. He also developed a taste for UNC basketball. His new film is inspired by ex-CIA agent Robert Baer's memoir See No Evil and has received strong reviews (with the vigorous exception of Godfrey Cheshire's on page 71). Recently, the 40-year-old Gaghan, who earned an Oscar in 2000 for his script for Steven Soderbergh's Traffic spoke with the Independent Weekly by phone from Atlanta. For me the models were a little different The real things that I was thinking about were Wages of Fear. Z, particularly Z. Then some of the ones from the '70s...

  • OK, say it quick: Oh my god I'm on fire. See, that's what the Hamden duo of Max Stenstrom and Will Stohler of Ohmygodimonfire want you to do. I mean, when you think about it, if you were on fire, you would hardly yell slowly. You would say, "Ohmygodimonfire." It all makes sense now, right? What might not make so much sense is how two Hamden High School sophomores can make such sophisticated and funny - - yes, actually funny -- songs and then turn them into a live experience. Oh, sure, OMG won The Space's Battle of the Bands IV last month, but it's not exactly accurate to consider the duo a band. The first time I caught OMG I didn't know what to expect. While standing with Space booker Rory Conlan and Aerospace, 1929 guitarist Noah Goldman during OMG's performance at the BOB, we all just...
