Coastal areas obviously take the brunt of the storms when hurricanes head inland. High winds and water toss and destroy even large vessels like they were toys. Hurricane Irene that recently followed the east coast from one end to the other was no different.
Early reports from the Boat Owners Association of the United States (Boat US) indicate that this storm struck inland lake and river regions in New York and New England particularly hard, including the Hudson and Mohawk River Valleys, Lake George, Lake Champlain and Lake Winnipesaukee as well as Cape Cod.

The Environmental Protection Agency is preparing to vote this summer on whether to allow a 50 percent increase in the amount of ethanol in the nation's gasoline supply, according to the Boat Owners Association of the United States, the nation's largest boating group.
Testing on whether the new gas works is scheduled to be done on a group of 2001-and-newer model vehicles. No testing, the Boat Owners Association says, will be done on older cars, boats, non-road vehicles or gas engine-powered equipment.

As if high gasoline prices weren't enough to ruin a boater's day, problems with ethanol fuel blends might leave some people stuck at the dock.
Fiberglass fuel tanks, when filled with gasoline formulated with ethanol, might fail or cause engine damage, according to a report from Boat U.S., the Boat Owners Association of the United States.

The idea of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) allowing the introduction of a fuel that has never been independently tested for use with marine engines has the Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatU.S.) and the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) urging every boater in America to speak out on the issue before the federal comment period closes July 20.
In March, Growth Energy, a pro-ethanol organization, and 54 ethanol producers petitioned the EPA to allow an increase in the amount of ethanol in gasoline from 10% (E10) to 15% (E15). After an initial comment period that drew nearly 30,000 comments from concerned boaters, the marine industry, marina operators and many other boating groups, the agency extended the comment deadline to July 20.
