ROCKLAND - The Coast Guard will be patrolling the harbor here more heavily in coming weeks, according to Station Rockland's Commanding Officer Sebastian Arnsdorf. In recent weeks several minor boat crashes and a boat fire are spurring the increased patrols and boater education efforts, he said.

Despite heavy boat traffic over the Fourth of July weekend, there were only two reportable boating accidents on Smith Mountain Lake. On July 2 just before 4 p.m., a couple was thrown from a personal watercraft after the vessel hit a large wake, said Capt. Tony Fisher of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. The PWC continued on its path and struck a boat moored to a personal dock near R37. The boat, lift and dock were damaged.

DETROIT Regulators in three states are investigating whether companies in London and Miami sold a fraudulent insurance policy to the owner of a tour boat that capsized on a New York lake and killed 20 elderly tourists, a newspaper reported Saturday. The 40-foot Ethan Allen capsized Oct. 2 on Lake George with 48 people onboard. Nineteen of the 20 victims were from Michigan.

BLOOMINGTON - A deadly approach to Evergreen Lake's west boat ramp will be rerouted, the McLean County Board decided Tuesday. The $230,000 project will add curves to Ropp Road as it enters Comlara Park. Ropp currently ends at the west boat ramp and at least four people died in separate accidents when their cars went into the lake.
