Commercialism in athletics preceded the passage of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which stated that "no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance." The universities of Oklahoma and Georgia, both CFA members, sued the NCAA, and the Supreme Court held that the NCAA television policy was a restraint of trade in violation of the Sherman Act (National Collegiate Athletic Association v. Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma et al., 1984). The same network had brought college basketball big money when it gained the rights to cover the NCAA men's basketball tournament in 1982.
