Cottrol was married to Jewel Gassaway Cottrol for over 50 years until her death in 2002. She was a tireless worker at St. Mark's United Methodist Church and for the Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church. Cottrol served as one of the advisors to the Jewel Cottrol MultiMedia Scholars Program, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the underserved through different media experiences.
A former managing editor of the Amsterdam News and frequent contributor to Time magazine, Cottrol worked as a photojournalist during the first Harlem Renaissance in the '40s through the '90s and completed assignments on several of the historic events that happened in Harlem and the rest of the United States, as well as countries in the Caribbean, Latin and South America.

Maenzanise's talk is titled "The World Is My Parish.'' Ordained in the Zimbabwe United Methodist Church, she is an alternate representative of the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church to the United Nations. In that capacity she follows the Commission for Social Development and the Commission on the Status of Women since 1988.
