Few logistical operations of the Civil War were so fraught with risk as the sea trade through the Federal blockade. Yet sea commerce was essential to the survival of the Confederacy and highly profitable to those who dared challenge the blockade.
For most of the war, long, shallow-draft steamers cleared Southern ports, loaded to the gunwales with the cotton that was so much in demand in Europe. The same vessels returned with a mix of military supplies and luxury goods that helped sustain the Confederacy.

Though born into slavery, Rainey (Joseph) received limited schooling that he gained mainly through observation, experience and travel and he followed his father's footsteps working as a barber in a fashionable Charleston hotel. While visiting Philadelphia, he met and married Susan (surname is unknown) in 1859. At the start of the Civil War, he was forced to work for the Confederacy, first as a blockade-runner, and then on fortifications. That he was a free man did not matter, so instead of aiding the Confederacy, he fled with his wife to Bermuda in 1862.
He resumed working as a barber and he lived in St. George and then in Hamilton until the end of the Civil War. In 1865, he returned to Charleston. There he and his elder brother, [Edward], participated in the Colored People's Convention...
