Even if unions at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and its sister paper in Ohio agree to contract concessions, the papers might be sold if losses from weak advertising and circulation are greater than cost savings, a credit rating service said.

NEW YORK -- Verizon Communications Inc.'s $6.7 billion takeover of long-distance provider MCI Inc. is the latest example of how regulatory changes in Washington are continuing to transform the telephone industry.
A court ruling nearly a year ago and subsequent decisions by the Federal Communications Commission were key catalysts for Monday's deal as well as last month's $16 billion takeover of AT&T Corp. by SBC Communications Inc. Those findings effectively forced long- distance providers on the auction block by boosting their operating costs, compounding a multiyear slide in customers and revenues.

DALLAS (HedgeWorld.com) - Highland Capital Management LP announced that it has filed a state lawsuit in Travis County, Texas, in an effort to block a transaction between Motient Corp., of Lincolnshire, Ill., and SkyTerra Communications Inc., New York.
Motient, a provider of wireless data systems to the business market, and SkyTerra, a broad-based telecommunications company, announced an agreement May 8 to consolidate the ownership and control of certain enterprises in which each has an interest. Highland contends that the deal is harmful to Motient stockholders, in part because it will require a payment by Motient of $50 to $80 million in corporate taxes.
