  • Some things just get better with age -- fine wine, a chunk of bleu cheese. And with the right vision and planning, a shopping mall. That's been the case for the Mall in Columbia, said many patrons Tuesday as they bustled from store to store and enjoyed the day- long festivities honoring the mall's 40th anniversary. The activities -- which included a fashion show and an outdoor "birthday party" complete with cupcakes and paper hats -- were about commemorating the past four decades of retail success, but for many, the occasion prompted a look to the future.

  • They live in Los Angeles, but they dip their chicken wings in bleu cheese. They live in Boston, but they stubbornly root for the Bills and Sabres.

  • John Morris is the Liberated Man. After co-founding Belmont Shore's Legends and almost a quarter-century of pioneering work in the heart of Downtown Long Beach as the owner of Mum's, Cohiba and Smooth's, all the while skirmishing with City Hall and various business associations, he has moved out and down the coast to live a mellower life and to promote McKenna's On the Bay. We recently sat down with him and enjoyed the sunset over Alamitos Bay, with a side of nachos. And a Bombay martini (for us; Morris had iced tea). Question: I like these bleu cheese-stuffed olives, and I'm not a bleu cheese-stuffed olives kind of guy.

  • Although Im sure well start seeing Christmas decorations in stores any day now, tis the season of a different kind in my mind. With cooler weather, crisp nights and falling leaves comes chili, football and tailgating. According to the folks at Tailgate Champ (a new smartphone app that connects food, family and friends during football season by letting groups register their tailgates and complete challenges to earn points) diehard fans are pretty serious about their tailgates. For example ... * 42 percent of all tailgaters spend more than $500 on food and supplies each season. * 95 percent prepare their food after they get to the stadium. * The average tailgate begins three to four hours before the game. * And 80 percent of tailgaters take photos with their phones, meaning what happens a...

  • With the exception of bleu cheese, I will eat just about anything. (As the question goes, "How can you tell when bleu cheese has gone bad?") On a trip to China, I ate snake bile soup one day and duck brains the next. In Scotland, I tried haggis. In Italy, I savored a seafood stew that included fish eyeballs. On a desperate afternoon at home, I even forced down a spoonful of my kids' leftover Franco-American SpaghettiOs.

  • Could your Super Bowl spread draw a flag for "excessive celebration"? Wings are one thing, but only Super Bowl fever brings out gravy for dunking, right next to the bleu cheese. Nachos aren't ultimate enough without bacon, two kinds of sausage and a forklift for table delivery.

  • The [Cobb] did come with bacon and bleu cheese - big fat crumbles of both. In a hubcap-sized bowl, green leafy lettuce (I didn't spot so much as a leaf of iceberg) was covered in sliced hard-boiled egg, avocado, carmts, radishes and black olives, chunks of tomato and big strips of grilled chicken. The carrots and radishes were bright and crunchy with none of the telltale brown color or softness that not-fresh veggies carry, and the chicken was moist on the inside and crispy on the outside. I ordered ranch dressing on the side to save on a few calories, but the homemade dressing (all of [RUDY]'s dressings are homemade) was so tantalizing, I poured it over my salad anyway, adding to it what was left of the rest of the Teacher's tangy bleu cheese dressing that accompanied her side salad. ..

  • The owners have also added a number of new aspects to its repertoire, including cooking classes, fundraising dinners, private functions, and an increasingly popular Friday Night Supper Club on the restaurant's second floor, which offers dinner, drinks, and dancing to live music in what was once the town hall's auditorium.\n Now, though, the new larger space has allowed for a more extensive beverage list that features a number of internationally acclaimed wines to complement anything on the unique menu. A sample four-course meal, for instance, could include an appetizer of ale molasses mojo shredded beef and corn masa cake and a glass of 2004 Cotes du Rhone Les Deux Albion, a Blue Heron salad with locally-grown mixed greens and locally-made bleu cheese, lacquered breast of duck and duck...
