The New River Valley ranks as one of the nation's hotspots for business growth, according to an economic development magazine, Site Selection. The Blacksburg-Christiansburg-Radford metro area, when compared to other metro areas with 200,000 or fewer people, tied with the Winchester area for 10th in the nation by number of projects. Each had seven, the magazine said.

If you've been happy buying firewood in those portable, plastic- wrapped bundles from the grocery store because a few sticks will do for the season, then don't call The Woodshed. There, firewood is mass produced in a mill for customers who heat primarily or partially with wood. To achieve industrial-scale production, the staff uses a 48-inch cut off saw, ram and splitter. An order fills a dump truck and costs hundreds of dollars.

Facing a revived truck market and with a new labor contract in hand, Volvo Trucks said Wednesday it will recall some 700 workers to its New River Valley plant. When the recalls are completed this spring, Volvo Trucks North America will have brought back over the course of nine months nearly 1,000 of the roughly 2,300 workers laid off from 2007 to 2009, when the recession and new emissions standards decimated demand for heavy trucks. The company had also recalled 580 workers in late 2007.
