Only a stage where a trio of blond CSUMB co-eds are comfortable singing Barry White's "Walrus of Love" and "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe" and a petite middle-aged man can improvise his own- dirtierversion of Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" can be labeled the best. Bobby Vegas, the Brit's 10-yearveteran MC, offers a vast variety of songs to choose from Mondays, Tuesdays and Sundays, some 5,000 all told, covering everything from Earth Wind & Fire to Third Eye Blind. Important note: That index also includes Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" and Sir Mix-aLot's "Baby Got Back.

Black Market Liquor Bar opened last month in Studio City in the former Wine Bistro space on a stretch of Ventura Boulevard that has become bar heaven. The lively spot offers terrific, upscale shareable fare designed by consulting chef Antonia Lofaso, who previously worked at Foxtail and Spago and competed in Bravo's "Top Chef" and "Top Chef All-Stars." Some nights Lofaso can be found in the kitchen. Go early before it gets crazy, grab a booth and you're in for some good eats.
Devoid of any signage, except for a faded Victory Motorcycle Co. sign (the building housed a motorcycle shop at one time) above the black awning on the front of the dark reddish brown building, locate the place via the address.

One night in Black Rock, the Sportsmen's Tavern was playing host to Dale Watson of Austin, Texas. He's the kind of rugged, tattooed guy who tells it like it is.
A couple of beers ago, she mighta come back," runs one of his lyrics.

Chain restaurants have an edge on locally owned establishments. National advertising, sophisticated websites, the economy of buying in large scale, and the appeal of consistent flavors and dishes across locations brings diners reasonable prices and comfortable expectations. Ruby Tuesday has a location in Christiansburg that should deliver on these expectations and value, but it falls short.
The staff is attired in black and ready with a warm welcome when you enter. It's easy to see the salad bar and get a glimpse of the impressive cocktail bar before being seated. Big windows allow a view of busy U.S. 11. A laminated drink menu is just part of the well-appointed table that is perhaps a little crowded. The servers introduce themselves by first name and promise to take care of y...

Small, noisy and fun, fun, fun the Black Rock Kitchen & Bar, aka BRK&B, has just recently been brought to you by Mark and Charlie Goldman of Allentown Hardware Cafe, and there are many similarities between the two restaurants. They are both small, they are both crowded and they are both sited in former retail outlets in distinctive city neighborhoods.
Allentown Hardware you know already -- on Allen Street just west of Elmwood. BRK&B is in a more surprising place, on Amherst Street between Elmwood and Grant, in the heart of Black Rock, an old neighborhood that's beginning to make its culinary mark. Wegmans, Spar's Sausage and soon-to-come Debbie Clark's Delish Bakery are but a croissant toss away.
