It's been nearly three decades since the passage of government legislation that has allowed historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) the chance to form alliances that may establish the next Silicon Valley-with African-American scientists and engineers at the epicenter of the technology boom. Thanks to the Bayh-Dole Act of 1980, HBCUs are quickly becoming technology hubs for research and development that may rival mainstream colleges and universities. She married Dale R. Wright, Sr., a journalist/Pulitzer Prize Nominee in 1955. They were divorced in the mid-1970s and remained friends, sharing parenting responsibilities throughout her lifetime. The family settled in the Riverdale section of the Bronx in 1964. Riverdale served as Ms. Wright's homebusiness-arts base for more than four decades. For 12 years she operated The Wright Way Enterprises, a business serving emerging Black artists. She worked tirelessly for the Bronx chapter of the New York Urban League (40-year Advisory Board member), Bronx Council on the Arts, New York Coalition of 100 Black Women (founding member), Delta Sigma Theta Sorority (founding member, North Manhattan Alumnae chapter), Les ViVantes Noires Inc., The Trio Inc., and a host of other civic and social groups.
A testament to his marketing savvy, he often fronted images of whites in his ads in predominantly white suburbia, while using his own flying, caped crusader-like image in ads concentrated in urban centers. He was the impetus behind the founding of the national Black Ford and Lincoln-Mercury Dealers Association, and was lauded by former President Jimmy Carter in 1978 for outstanding achievement in business. In a 1984 speech, the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson impugned the Ford Motor Co.'s treatment of minority dealers, terming it "racist."
