We have had some beautiful fall days, beautiful sunsets and sun rising, but this time change has about driven me nuts. I can't see what they gain by it, but we've got to go along with it. Last Saturday, I was invited to Tranquility Lane to a wonderful barbecue at the new home of Todd Wilkins, one fine young man, a teacher at Midway School. His dad, Bubba Wilkins, comes by the museum all the time to visit and I enjoy his company. They had food galore; the best slaw I ever put in my mouth and that barbecue was right. Todd's mother, Paula, bought a dessert that would make your eyes flap. It was new to me and absolutely delicious. Todd, I wish you many years of happiness in your new hom. David Tucek recently gave a careful explanation of how to construct a life table. This paper briefly reviews part of that paper, extends the discussion to joint life expectancy, and finally moves on to the construction of life annuities, joint life annuities, deferred and temporary life annuities, comparing each to annuities for fixed periods, called annuities certain. The paper is based on Microsoft Excel tables from the US Life Tables, 2005. The real product, though, is the extension of those Excel tables that allows calculation of the relevant annuities for all combinations of interest rate, age pairs for the joint tables, and periods of annuity deferral or temporary annuities. Dear Abby: I have chosen to celebrate my children's birthdays with family and one friend. I want my children to understand early on that birthdays are not about getting loads of gifts, but to celebrate life with family. We are invited to many parties for their friends and classmates, but I have always chosen to attend only those of our close friends. I find it disheartening to watch children these days rip into a bunch of gifts and toss them aside without saying thank you or even commenting on the gift. It's all about the next package and the volume.
