[Harold Pinter]'s brilliance is in his frightening examination and magnification of the mundane. The characters in the show -- husband-and-wife seaside boarding-house proprietors, their brooding guest, a local tart and two mysterious outsiders -- couldn't be more banal. The action of the play (excluding the threat brought by the outsiders) is so commonplace as to be almost negligible. And it's this bland terrain where Pinter sets up camp and proceeds to explode his dramatic depth-charges. In its own way, Birthday Party is like a Picasso cubist painting; the view is taken apart, broken down into disjointed images, and it's up to us to reassemble them based on whatever history we've brought with us into the theater.
I hope I haven't used up my allotted adjectives, because I still need to ...

Dear Abby: I have a problem that happens once a year -- my birthday at work. There's a huge potluck with cake, banners, gifts and a card that has been circulating around the office for a week. I cringe at the attention. Everyone means well, but these celebrations are pure torture for me. I'm a 7-year-old all over again, trying my best to keep the anxiety and waterworks in check.
It goes back to my childhood. Growing up, we were very poor, and my parents made it clear that sacrifices had been made for my "big day," which always ended up with me guilt-ridden and in tears.
