  • LEWISTON -- The Stanton Bird Club of Lewiston/Auburn has announced the fall schedule of Guided Bird Walks. This continues the fifth year for the bird walk series which starts each June and continues to December. The season will begin with a Sept. 7 walk along the old Spring Road in North Auburn, now a walking trail along the shores of Lake Auburn, to look for early fall migrants. This will be followed by a walk focusing on botany at Beaver Park in Lisbon with co-leader Susan Hayward. Each walk is different with the intent of observing a variety of local birds either in different habitats or as different species migrate.

  • AUBURN - A guided bird walk conducted by the Stanton Bird Club will be held in partnership with the Androscoggin Land Trust at the Alexander-Harkins Preserve on Wednesday, Aug. 12. The walk is free and open to the public. Stan and Joan DeOrsey will lead the walk and will identify and comment on birds seen or heard. Michael Auger, trust director of land protection and stewardship, will share his knowledge of plants and will discuss the preserve and its significance.

  • WHITTIER - Whittier Audubon will conduct a guided bird walk at 7 a.m. Saturday, May 14, at Sycamore Canyon, 5030 Workman Mill Road. The group will meet in the trailhead's parking lot.

  • LAYTON -- A free sandhill crane bird walk will be held Saturday by the Wild Bird Center, Division of Wildlife Resources and the Nature Conservancy. Participants will have an opportunity to see sandhill cranes as they migrate to Utah for the spring nesting season. Sandhill cranes make a spectacular display, as males court females in an elaborate dance with ballet-like jumps and pirouettes, all with great trumpeting as they vocalize their excitement for the spring mating season.

  • LEWISTON - The Stanton Bird Club has announced the fall schedule of guided bird walks. This season will mark the third year for the bird walk series. Last year, more than 50 people participated in one or more walks, and identified 92 species of birds over the period. All walks are free and open to everyone, beginning naturalist to advanced birder. Walks are led by Stan and Joan DeOrsey, who will identify and comment on birds seen and heard and by Susan Hayward, Stanton naturalist, who will share her knowledge of botany. Walks are held in a variety of interesting and diverse local habitats, plus some private areas not normally open to the public. Anyone interested in walking, seeing new places, fresh air and nature is welcome.
