A St. Louis-based company can hang onto one of its big sellers after a federal jury found the product did not violate two ring binder patents and that the patents were invalid.
World Wide Stationery Manufacturing Co. sued St. Louis-based U.S. Ring Binder for patent infringement involving U.S. Ring's Insta- Clik mechanism, which is used in three-ring binders. The Insta-Clik allows users to open and close the binder by touching one lever. When the binder closes, the device instantly locks, preventing paper from falling out.

Two Long Island-based institutions were awarded substantial grant funding by the Empire State Development Corporation's board of directors Tuesday.
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory was awarded $2 million in Economic Development Fund grants to be used toward the cost of new machinery and equipment, while Binder and Binder LLC was the recipient of $250,000 in JOBS Now grants. That money will be used for a portion of the cost of the purchase and renovation of a 59,000 square foot office building in Hauppauge - one of four central hubs that will aid the firm in processing cases.
