INDIANAPOLIS - The emotional task of fighting freedom for the man who gunned down a sheriff's deputy during a bank robbery nearly 39 years ago ended satisfactorily for the lawman's family Thursday when the Indiana Parole Board once again rejected the convict's petition.
By a 4-0 vote, the board decided without discussion to deny parole to Billy Ray Adams, 64, who is serving a life sentence for the Feb. 24, 1972, slaying of Marion County Deputy Tom Settles, a crime some describe as an execution.

New bass fishing circuit: There will be a new circuit on the Mid- South's bass tournament schedule in 2010. It's the Peanut Craft Lures Tournament Trail, the brainchild of noted Mid-South angler and lure company owner Peanut Quon of Memphis. The circuit will have three divisions - Mississippi River, Pickwick and Northwest Mississippi. Terry Bates of Greenville (662-332-3341) will serve as the director for the Mississippi River circuit, while Danny Carter, owner of Sports of All Sorts in Hernando (662-429-1162), will direct the other divisions. The circuit's first tournament will be Feb. 27 at Pickwick (Scruggs Landing, followed by March 13 at Lake...
