Voters are all too familiar with local agencies asking them to increase their property taxes come Election Day. But a ballot question to lower taxes? Unheard of.
Rep. Mike Sutherland, R-Warrenton, wants to change that. He has filed a bill that would give residents a chance to ask fellow voters whether a local entity's taxes should be decreased. "There are lots of ways tax rates can be increased, but really, the statue has no mechanism for tax rates to be decreased," Sutherland said. "If things were bad enough and a taxing district was abusing its ability to tax, this would give a mechanism to taxpayers to say, 'We've had enough.'
