County Executive John R. Leopold's administration opposes legislation that would provide financial incentives for developers to build affordable housing for working class families.
Alan Friedman, legislative director for the administration, called the bill "extremely problematic" at a public hearing Monday before the County Council, and argued it would give county resources to developers when there are more than 2,500 homes on the market in the county in the price range targeted by the bill.

The plan provides $9,000 to qualified couples who set up savings accounts to buy a home, start a business, or pay for a child's education. Under the proposal, the couples would receive a matching federal contribution of $3 for every $1 invested, up to the maximum payment of $9,000. They're required to withdraw the money within 3 years and be married by then. The Senate committee approved the budget, and the bill is slated to be voted upon by the full Senate. The plan is an idea Brownback hopes will be adopted in other parts of the country as well.
