It is hard to imagine the tattooed-and-pierced guys from Mastodon being fearful of anything. But the band's new album, "Crack the Skye," diverges from past efforts in that many of the songs are personal; drummer and vocalist Brann Dailor admits he wasn't sure opening up emotional veins was the right thing to do. It's kind of scary at first," Dailor says in advance of the band's appearance Monday at the Palace Theatre in Greensburg. "You're not sure if you should put everything out there. But I think it definitely pays off. Fans can connect more on a more-human level, which is what it's all about, building that connection between people and the music. I think it definitely helped.

Mastodon is cool. That's what the Atlanta quartet's drummer, Brann Dailor, wants to get across. With a style that sounds like he's got eight arms, the percussionist leads the prog metal band through dizzying and loud time changes and thunderous riffs, all played behind mystical lyrics. Just not about dragons. I don't think that would be cool," explains Dailor, during a recent phone conversation from behind his kit in an Atlanta rehearsal space. "We have fantasy lyrics, which are cool. So many people saw 'Lord of the Rings,' but dragons are a fine line we don't want to cross. That's too much like Dungeons and Dragons. We're trying to be epic. I mean, we're called Mastodon. That's a giant elephant.

A day after legislators voted to override the governor's veto of a transportation bill, elected officials met with bankers in St Paul MN to update them on legislative issues affecting the banking industry. About 180 bankers met Feb. 26 for the annual Bank Day at the Capitol sponsored by the Minnesota Bankers Association. The Independent Community Bankers of Minnesota hosted a similar event Feb. 21, attracting about 50 bankers.
