The university presidents aren't scheduled to attend the Big East meetings that run today through noon Wednesday, but their absence won't curb significant administrative discussion on what should be the conference's primary goal. In this gabfest at Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. - hey, who said the Big East wouldn't be in Gator Bowl Country again? - the Big East needs to really figure out how to squeeze many, many more dollars from its television rights.
NEW YORK - The new Big East will span four time zones, 3,000 miles from coast to coast and, eventually, have 12 teams. The beleaguered and ever-changing conference hopes it all adds up to a billion dollar television contract and a spot among the best football leagues in the nation.
MORGANTOWN - When Butch Jones looks back on when he arrived at the University of Cincinnati to coach football in December of 2009, he remembers a team that finished the regular season unbeaten and would play in the Sugar Bowl, but had just two players who could bench press 400 pounds. Now we have 18, Jones said. That goes hand- in-hand with playing our physical style of offense and defense and generating turnovers and taking care of the football as well. This sums up the state of the : Third-year Syracuse coach Doug Marrone is one of the league's elder statesmen. He's not the longest-tenured coach - that would be 10- year Rutgers coach Greg Schiano - but Marrone has at least a year on every other coach in the league.
Nation PROVO, Utah - The Big East has had discussions with BYU about giving up its football independence and joining the rebuilding conference.
West Virginia University officials said Friday the Mountaineers formally accepted an invitation to join the Big 12 Conference and insisted they are leaving the Big East next summer -- not after a required 27-month exit notification. It's clear that on July, 1, 2012," university president James P. Clements said, "we will be a member of the Big 12.
NEW YORK - The Big East introduced Boise State, San Diego State, Houston, SMU and Central Florida as its new members, effective 2013. The Big East Conference is the first truly national college football conference," Commissioner John Marinatto said Wednesday during a teleconference with the university leaders from the new members.
MORGANTOWN - It's difficult to sugar coat the way the NFL draft turned out over the weekend for players and schools from the Big East. Difficult, but not impossible.
