E. Peters's new study compares the canonical evolution, transmission, production, and language of the sacred books of Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Readers who have some knowledge of biblical history and scholarship will already be familiar with much of the territory Peters surveys. But here that familiar territory borders on a detailed discussion of the Qur'an, and the frontier between these two traditions makes for an illuminating and often surprising adventure of ideas. The book has neither footnotes nor bibliography, but the depth of the author's scholarship is nevertheless evident on every page.

Congressional testimony records how, more than a century ago, American interrogators in the war in the Philippines sought the aid of a physician to administer the 'water cure.'2 When an American soldier siphoned water into the nose of a local "insurgent," and the water failed to make him talk, the physician directed that salt be added to the water, knowing full well the further irritation and discomfort that this would cause.3 During the Cold War, psychiatrists and psychologists also helped the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)-sometimes willingly, other times unwittingly-to develop aggressive approaches to interrogation that drew heavily on physical and psychological stressors.4 The role of psychological research in the development of these approaches is clear from the CIA's 1963 inter...

BROOKSVILLE - The Good Life Center will celebrate the return of its Monday night meeting series to Helen and Scott Nearing's Forest Farm Homestead with a program featuring the Nearings' seminal book "Living the Good Life - How to Live Sanely and Simply in a Troubled World," published in 1954.
At 7 p.m. Aug. 9, at the center, Greg Joly will explore "Living the Good Life" through his research into the book's five-page bibliography. In "The Annotated Good Life," Joly will discuss "the depth of studied inquisitiveness and intellectual rigor" that formed the basis for the Nearings' book.

In addition to copious annotations, the author provides a glossary of foreign terms, a bibliography of unpublished sources and contemporary published works, and concludes with a ten-page index. Because of its narrow focus and theoretical character, the work will be of interest primarily to the historian of early East India Company relations.

Numerous passages, on the other hand, speak to the author's passion for the genre. [...] in the margin of a set of Favourite Songs compiled from Veracini's Adriano in Siria (London, 1736), Feldman notes that for the price of Walsh's print, you could be an Adriano, an Emirena, a Farnaspe, or even an Osroa, which effectively meant you could play Senesino, Cuzzoni, Bartolli, or Montagnana playing one of their parts, or even pretend to be Farinelli.
